The Idea of You Review: Worth Watching?

Published by

Director Michael Showalter’s film adaptation of Robinne Lee’s ‘The Idea of You’ is a liberating story of a 40-year-old divorcee falling in love with a 24-year-old boy band member. The movie is all set to release on Prime Video this Thursday, the 2nd of May.

The movie revolves around a whirlwind romance between art gallery owner Solene Marchand (played by Anne Hathaway) and pop star Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) – their meet-cute is about the interesting way they meet when Solene takes her daughter to Coachella.

How Is the Movie The Idea of You Different From the Book?

In Lee’s bestselling author, Solene ends the relationship with Hayes because both of them are in different phases of their lives. And her relationship with her tween daughter Isabella is certainly suffering because of the negative attention she has received on the age gap scandalous romance.

However, in the film, there is much more buzz for Solene which ends up becoming too much for her. In addition to the paparazzi and reporters that constantly hound and wait for Solene outside her gallery and home whilst her daughter Isabella ‘Izzy’ is bullied at school.

This causes the fascinating couple to break up primarily because of Izzy’s traumatic school experience.

Soon that night, Hayes visits Solene, and she apologizes while he tells her that he loves her. They agree to revisit their relationship in five years but in the meantime, they are open to other chances at happiness.

Jump to five years when Solene and Hayes have parted ways, and they are quite happy in their respective lives.

The reason for such difference in the movie and book had been explained by Michael Showalter. Showalter had mentioned that he wanted his film to have a hopeful and uplifting ending: which is evident when Hayes visits Solene’s art gallery, and they set eyes on each other. Bittersweet.
