In the Shirley trailer, the first thing that catches the eye is King’s portrayal as a congresswoman. It’s worth noting that the politician is depicted as an insatiable optimist, a quality that was challenging to cultivate during a time when the US had recently passed segregation laws. At that moment, Shirley was the person who could lead important debates and guide society forward.

In her trailer, Shirley emphasizes her goal of becoming President instead of settling for a representative position.

During a scene with white congressional members, she announces her intention to hold all politicians accountable. Sadly, America failed her.

The movie portrays Shirley Chisholm’s path to becoming the first Black Congresswoman in 1968 and the first Black female presidential candidate in 1972. The energetic and honest Shirley stated in her legendary candidacy declaration speech that she was a “candidate of the American People” rather than a typical politician.

Academy Award winner Regina King is to bring this political lead to life. Lance Reddick, who played Wesley MacDonald “Mac” Holder in John Wick, will play Chisholm’s iconic campaign manager in Shirley.

Terrence Howard, who starred in Hustle & Flow, will also play Arthur Hardwick, Jr., a politician who worked with Chisholm in the New York State Legislature & ultimately married her. Michael Cherrie plays Chisholm’s first spouse, Conrad Chisholm.

Christina Jackson plays Barbara Lee, Dorian Missick is Ron Dellums, Amirah Vann is Diahann Carrol, W. Earl Brown is George Wallace, Brad James is Huey P. Newton, and André Holland is Walter Fauntroy. Regina King’s sister, Reina King, will play Chisholm’s sister, Muriel St. Hill.

Shirley will be available on Netflix on March 22, 2024.
