Get on Your Knees | Official Trailer

Jacqueline Novak’s Netflix special is an obituary on s*x and power.

The typical Netflix comedy special trailer shows a comic slowly moving around the stage, doing set-ups, punchlines, and act-outs for an hour, fragmented only by shots of the audience laughing. The title often depends on the best evening joke or a reference to the comic’s public image.

Get on Your Knees, however, breaks out of the formula. Novak spends 90 minutes on one issue, delving into the power dynamics of s*x acts, the standards and worries that everyone has going on, and the way miscommunications are amplified by silence from at least one side. Novak races around the stage, reflecting on wrong intentions from her teenage years.

Novak’s use of language and use of precise and unexpected analogies delighted throughout the show, as did her many enthusiastic descriptions of the male s*x organ.

Novak picked her onstage attire of a gray T-shirt & skinny jeans because it is “the most neutral, sort of nothing outfit,” with no statements that may contribute to, detract from, or distract from the performance. It’s a brilliant strategy, with Novak’s humility underlining that it’s her self-possession rather than her free-spirited s*xuality that shocks.
