The Witcher Spin-off Series The Rats Finished Filming, Storyline, and More!

Published by

The Witcher, Netflix‘s mega-hit series, is getting a spin-off titled The Rats. Netflix has been discreetly developing a new series on a team of chaotic teenagers.

While the streamer has not officially announced the series, rumors about its production have been circulating for months. The upcoming prequel show will center on a team of teenage criminals introduced at the end of Season 3. Here’s all we know about the planned spin-off, set for release in 2024.

When Will The Rats Be Released?

Netflix Life

Netflix has yet to confirm the series, let alone its release date. Multiple people connected to the program have stated that the show is expected to air in 2024.

Given that the scheduled follow-up anime film will be released in late 2024, we are confident that this prequel will be released as soon as spring/summer 2024.

Who Will Be Appearing in The Rats?

Yahoo News UK

The Rats are a group of teenage criminals that includes Giselher, Mistle, Kayleigh, Iskra, Reef, & Asse.

Ben Radcliffe, Christelle Elwin, Fabian McCallum, Aggy K. Adams, Juliette Alexandra, & Connor Crawford play them, respectively. They debuted in Season 3 of The Witcher and will return to their roles for this spin-off.

Aside from the Rats, there are two significant castings worth mentioning. The first is Dolph Lundgren, who will play Brehen in the film. Brehen is a Cat School witcher. He appears in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Season of Storms, which takes place during the first season of the TV show.

Then there’s Leo Bonhart, a ruthless mercenary who has murdered many witchers. Bonhart is played by South African actor Sharlto Copley, who has significant roles in both The Rats and The Witcher season 4.

Bonhart is the first person who springs to mind, particularly as the crime ring the Rats would be looting is likely to be run by Bonhart’s cousin, Dominik Bombastus Houvenaghel. Both characters will be seen in The Rats.

What Can We Expect from The Rats?

Netflix

The Rats’ premise is not based on any of The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski’s books or storylines, but instead takes the characters and creates its past for them before they meet Ciri at the end of The Witcher Season 3.

While Netflix has not officially revealed The Rats, we do have a plot synopsis:

“Six teenage thieves must rely on their dirty talents as they plan the largest heist of their lives to defeat the kingdom’s most lethal crime gang.”

According to the description, it will be a prequel set before season 3, as the group will have seven members once Ciri shows up.   The Rats will go into important aspects of the franchise’s backstory essential to the mothership series’ following season. The Rats will play an important role in Season 4 of The Witcher.
