The documentary television series is hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and it premiered back in 2012 on PBS.
The unique thing about the documentary series is that each episode is presented by celebrity guests with a ‘book of life’ that is compiled with information that had been researched by professionals that allow them to take a sneak peek at their ancestral histories, all the while learning about familial connections and their lineage – henceforth the name of the show!
The series uses traditional genealogical research techniques and genetics to discover the family history of some pretty well-known Americans – including Y-chromosome DNA, mitochondria DNA, and autosomal DNA that analyses both ancient and recent genetic relationships – it’s all pretty cool if you ask us!
Each celebrity guest is given a book of life, which as we mentioned includes information about their ancestry by a group of researchers.
In some episodes, each guest is predominantly shown seated opposite Gates as he takes them on a guide through their book. To show any correlations between the guests and their families, each episode cuts to and back between two or three guest stories.
In addition to celebs, sometimes it’s regular people (like you and me!) who manage to get featured on the episode. The non-celeb guests normally consist of a group of peers – like that one time when Gates invited his local barbershop friends to take a DNA test!
