The Triumph of Queer Women’s Friendship in Jodie Foster and Annette Bening’s First Nyad Clip. Jodie Foster and Annette Bening Appear in a Swimming Series From the Directors of ‘Free Solo,’

Nyad, starring Annette Bening, is a documentary about marathon swimmer Diana Nyad’s historic swim from Cuba to Florida unassisted using a shark tank, which she achieved at 64 after three failed attempts.

It also digs into an enduring bond between LGBT women and their chosen family. Jodie Foster plays Nyad’s best friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll, who was at her side during the 110-mile swim, acting as guide, cheerleader, carer, and nutritionist while staying on her feet to fight off sharks and jellyfish. Netflix has now published the first trailer for the film.

NYAD Annette Bening and Jodie Foster | Exclusive clip

The two-minute exclusive clip, which Netflix published on Thursday, shows Nyad telling skeptical Stoll about her aspirations to conquer the “Mount Everest” of swims – over a pleasant game of ping-pong.

The footage establishes the two’s long connection spanning decades when Bening’s Nyad announces to Foster’s Stoll during a casual game of ping pong that she plans to try an elusive Cuba-to-Florida swim again at 60.

Nyad confirms that it feels “great” to be back in the water. She then tells Stoll she is ready to pursue her ambition again and attempts to persuade Stoll that she should be her coach. The two talk like only old friends about the pros and cons of swimming from Cuba to Florida.

Here’s the official synopsis:

NYAD is an outstanding real story of determination, friendship, and the victory of the human spirit that tells the story of exceptional athlete Diana Nyad.

Thirty years after giving up marathon swimming for a successful career as a sports journalist, Diana (four-time Academy Award-nominated Annette Bening) becomes obsessed with accomplishing an epic swim that has always eluded her: the 110-mile journey from Cuba to Florida dubbed the “Mount Everest” of swims.

Diana embarks on a spectacular four-year journey with her closest friend and trainer, Bonnie Stoll (two-time Academy Award star Jodie Foster), and a devoted sailing team, determined to be the first to complete the swim without a shark cage.

The inspiring story of “tenacity, friendship, and the victory of the human spirit” provides poignant insight into the importance of friendship for LGBTQ+ women.
