In the year 1987 in Rome, there’s a man named Father Gabriele Amorth who’s really good at doing exorcisms, which means he helps people who are possessed by evil spirits.

But some important people in the church, like Cardinal Sullivan and his group, get mad at him because he did exorcisms without asking permission.

Father Gabriele explains that he only did exorcisms on people who were not thinking clearly due to being mentally ill, and the exorcisms actually helped them feel better. But the church people are still upset with him.

At the same time, a lady named Julia Vasquez becomes a widow and moves to Spain from America with her kids to fix up her late husband’s family house, which is called San Sebastian Abbey.

Her son, Henry, is quiet most of the time and doesn’t seem bothered by the move, but her daughter, Amy, doesn’t like it.

Henry explores the house and finds a hidden crack that lets out a bad spirit that enters his body. Henry’s condition gets worse, so Julia asks a local priest, Esquibel, for help.

Eventually, the Pope asks Father Gabriele to come to Spain and help Henry. When Gabriele arrives, he realizes that a strong and evil spirit has taken over Henry.

With Esquibel’s help, Gabriele tries to make the spirit reveal its name through prayers. But the spirit fights back and makes Gabriele remember sad things from his past.

Gabriele understands he’s dealing with a very powerful enemy and starts investigating the history of the house and the church. He finds out about a bad history involving demons and a well in the yard.

Inside the house, they figure out that the same mean spirit that was possessed a long time ago is now after Gabriele.

Throughout the movie, Gabriele’s main goal is to save Henry. He feels a strong responsibility to help people because of his own past experiences. Henry survived a war but lost his friends, leading to feelings of guilt and a desire to save others.

Gabriele also regrets not being able to save a girl named Rosaria in the past, who believed she was possessed by Satan. This drives him to make amends.
