Michael Chaves has directed the upcoming American gothic supernatural horror movie ‘The Nun 2’. It serves as the sequel to the 2018 movie ‘The Nun and the ninth installment of The Conjuring Universe franchise.
The plot takes us four years after where the first film ended. The new film also features Sister Irene finding herself face to face once again with Valak, the demonic force known as the Nun- this time at a boarding school in France.
When Will ‘The Nun’ be Released in Theatre?
‘The Nun’ was released in the United States on September 7, 2018. Both films are based on characters written by Gary Dauberman and James Wan, the latter being one of the producers of the upcoming film.
It was first hinted by Wan in August of 2017, even before the release of ‘The Nun’ as he stated that he already knew at that time about the plot of a sequel film that would potentially complete the circle tying it back to the story of Lorraine set up with the first two Conjurings.
Peter Safran, the other producer of the upcoming movie, announced in April 2019 that the sequel is in fact in development. Both Wan and Safran were producers of the first film too. Akela Cooper joined the project as a screenwriter later that month.
‘The Nun 2’ was officially announced by Warner Bros. Pictures in April of 2022. Right after the day of this announcement Michael Chaves was announced to be directing the film.
The same month Wan confirmed that the role of Valak Soul is reprised by Bonnie Aarons from the first movie. Storm Reid was cast as a new main character in September of that year.
The next month Taissa Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet were confirmed as reprising cast members from the first movie. Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose Downey also joined the cast at the same time.
‘The Nun 2’ is set to be released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema on September 8, 2023.

Taissa Farmiga-
The role of Sister Irene will be reprised by American actress Taissa Farmiga in the upcoming movie.
Her other film credits include ‘The Bling Ring‘, ‘At Middleton’, ‘Mindscape’, ‘Jamesy Boy’, ‘The Final Girls’, ‘6 Years’, ‘In a Valley of Violence’, ‘Rules Don’t Apply’, ‘What They Had’, ‘The Long Dumb Road‘, ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’, ‘The Mule’, ‘John and the Hole’ etc.
Bonnie Aarons-
In the role of the titular Nun aka Valak, we will see American actress Bonnie Aarons reprising this role from the previous film.
Her other film credits include ‘Mulholland Drive’, ‘I Know Who Killed Me‘, ‘InAlienable’, ‘Dahmer vs. Gacy’, ‘Jakob’s Wife’ etc.
Jonas Bloquet-
As Maurice “Frenchie” Theriault in the upcoming movie, we will find Belgian actor Jonas Bloquet who also played the same role in the previous film.
In 2007 Bloquet played the main role of Jonas in the Belgian drama film for which he was nominated for Magritte Award for Most Promising Actor. As André, he was cast in the 2013 black comedy crime movie ‘The Family’.
The same year he also portrayed Ivan in the French drama ‘Tonnerre’ and the next year he played Hugh in the action thriller movie ‘3 Days to Kill’. In 2016 Bloquet was cast in the psychological thriller movie ‘Elle’ starring Vincent for which role he was nominated for César Award for Most Promising Actor.
The next year he played Patrick in the French drama film ‘Orphan’ and K-Tron Warrior in the space opera film ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’.
In 2018 Bloquet portrayed Jean-Loup in the Belgian drama film ‘Alone at My Wedding’. In the 2021 Japanese historical film ‘Baragaki: Unbroken Samurai’ he was cast as Jules Brunet.
Anna Popplewell-
In the role of Kate, we will find English actress Anna Popplewell as a new cast member. She starred as Betsey in the 1999 British romantic comedy-drama movie ‘Mansfield Park.
The next year she played Anna Sackville-Bagg in the comedy horror movie ‘The Little Vampire‘. In 2002 Popplewell was cast as Denise Smash in the family comedy movie ‘Thunderpants’.
The next year he starred as Maertge in the drama film ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. As Susan Pevensie he was cast in the high fantasy film ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’ in 2005 and reprised this role in its 2008 sequel ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’. Popplewell starred as Izzy Jacobs in the 2012 British drama film ‘Payback Season’.
Storm Reid-
American actress Storm Reid will be seen starring in an undisclosed role in the upcoming movie. She previously starred in the films ’12 Years a Slave, ‘Sleight’, ‘Lea to the Rescue’, ‘A Happening of Monumental Proportions’, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, ‘Don’t Let Go’, ‘The Invisible Man’, ‘The Suicide Squad‘, ‘One Way’, and ‘Missing’.
Also, Irish actress Katelyn Rose Downey has been cast in the upcoming movie in the role of Sophie.
