Is The Color Purple Releasing In December 2023?

Blitz Bazawule has directed the upcoming American musical coming-of-age period drama movie ‘The Color Purple’ which is based on the same-named stage musical both of which are adapted from Alice Walker’s 1982 same-named novel.

This upcoming adaptation marks the second movie adaptation of the novel following Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie.

Quincy Jones who was a producer of the 1985 film and Spielberg himself return to produce the new adaptation joined by Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders who were producers of the stage musical.

The plot of The Color Purple will chronicle the life-long struggles of Celie, an African American woman as well as of the other women whom she crosses paths with in life.

When Is The Color Purple Releasing?

On November 2, 2018, the film was first announced to be under development by the same companies which made the previous adaptation of the novel- Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.

Filming of the movie ran from March to July of 2022. The Color Purple is set to be released on December 25, 2023.

American actress and singer-songwriter Halle Bailey will be seen starring as young Nettie in the upcoming film.

Bailey rose to prominence for her portrayal of Ariel in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid‘ in 2023. She also starred in the new American drama film ‘The Line which premiered on June 9, 2023, at the Tribeca Festival.
