Netflix recently released a trailer for A24’s upcoming diving documentary, The Deepest Breath, which focuses on the extreme sport of freediving.
Did you know freediving is one of the most hazardous sports in the world? So much so that scaling Mount Everest is regarded as less dangerous.
Given the nature of free diving, it’s not surprising that it’s deadly. The Deepest Breath, an upcoming Netflix and A24 documentary, will follow a champion free diver’s attempt to break the world freediving record.

Laura McGann’s documentary The Deepest Breath follows the lives and interests of champion freediver Alessia Zecchini.
An Italian freediver, Alessia Zecchini, set a world record in her class by diving 109 meters in three minutes and 38 seconds. She was only 18 when she established a previous world record in the dangerous sport of freediving.
They’ve committed their lives to the extreme sport, which takes physical strength, mental drive, and unshakable confidence in the individuals who teach and help you along the way, accompanied by her safety diver, Stephen Keenan.
We’ll see how Zecchini and Keenan built an unbreakable friendship as Keenan assisted Zecchini in her aim of becoming the world’s best free diver throughout the documentary.
Given the sport’s dangers, Zucchini’s desire was fraught with danger. The Deepest Breath will take fans on an intimate and heartfelt journey into the ocean’s depths alongside these two exceptional people, using archive video spanning 35 years, interviews with the subjects’ parents, and more.
Filming took place in cities such as Rome, New York, Ireland, and the Bahamas. The first trailer has appeared ahead of Netflix’s July 19 release date.
For those unfamiliar with the intense sport of freediving, it comprises divers swimming as far as they can into the water while holding a single breath.
In some aspects, it’s comparable to scuba diving, only the divers don’t use oxygen tanks. Instead, they train for years to dive the length of a building and beyond in a single breath.
