Outlander Season 7 Episode 1 Ending Explained: What Is The Reason Behind Tom Christie’s Confession To Killing Malva? Did Tom Really Kill Her?

TVLine

While Jamie considers joining the British King’s forces against the Rebels, Tom Christie reveals his plan to confess to killing Malva. He writes a confession and submits it to a newspaper in Wilmington, hoping that Claire will be freed upon its publication.

Tom’s motive for confessing is his love for Claire. He then visits Martin’s ship and expresses his affection for her, explaining that Malva tried to harm both of them due to her desire for Jamie and his wealth. Tom also discloses that Malva is actually his brother and wife’s daughter.

Although Tom’s confession is expected to be believed, according to Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ novel series, he did not kill Malva.

The true culprit is Tom’s son and Malva’s half-brother, Allan, who impregnated and murdered her. Allan had been abusing Malva and killed her when she threatened to expose him to Claire.

Tom’s confession is driven by his love for Malva and gratitude towards Claire for providing refuge at Fraser’s Ridge. He wants to prevent his family from causing Claire further harm and takes responsibility for the crime, even if it means facing the gallows in her place.

Tom’s confession ultimately leads to Claire’s release. While she reunites with Jamie, she is reluctant to accept the idea that she is the reason for Tom’s self-sacrifice. However, Tom believes that accepting punishment is a way to repay Claire’s compassion.

Was Richard Brown Killed By Jamie?

TVLine

After Claire is released from jail, Jamie confronts Richard Brown, the man responsible for Claire’s arrest and imprisonment, with the intention of killing him. Jamie allows Richard to pray to the Lord before his impending death.

The suffering inflicted upon the Fraser family by Richard is unbearable for Jamie, especially witnessing Claire’s pain.

Given that Richard caused Claire to suffer in jail, Jamie’s anger and fury may drive him to kill Richard. The possibility of Jamie deciding against killing Richard, however, is significant.

Jamie may believe that death is a lesser punishment for Richard. Richard, after the death of his brother Lionel Brown, chose to harm Claire rather than seek revenge on Jamie directly, knowing that Claire holds a special place in Jamie’s heart. Richard’s aim is to see Claire face the gallows and cause further anguish to Jamie.

Similarly, Jamie may opt to spare Richard’s life to ensure he experiences prolonged suffering rather than a quick death. Also, Jamie might desire to witness Richard’s gradual suffering rather than granting him a swift end to his misery.
