Alfred Garnes, a sailor who is a member of the working class, was just lately given the responsibility of parenting a third child. As the second world war begins, he and his childhood friend Sigbjorn Kvalen (Wally) are working on a commercial ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

They are unarmed citizens fighting in a war they did not initiate. In a loop of violence and death, the two men fight to stay alive, but at any time, German submarines could attack their priceless vessels. Survival and return home are the only priorities for the combat sailors.

Cecilia, Alfred’s wife, raises their three children alone while enduring the war in Bergen, not knowing if she will ever see Alfred again.

In their attempt to attack the German submarine bunker in Bergen, British planes instead bombed a primary school in Laksevag and houses for civilians in Nostet, killing hundreds of civilians. Alfred and Wally in Canada question whether they have anything left at home to go back to when they learn of the tragedy.

More About The Limited Series War Sailor

Netfli

War Sailor, a film that was co-produced in Maltese, Norwegian, and German, will be made available on Netflix.

The mini-series was initially planned to be a two-hour feature film and was originally premiered as such in Norwegian, German, and Maltese theaters, where it enjoyed initial popularity and sold some 400,000 tickets before being snatched up by the streaming giant.

Yet, its time in theaters was cut short at the beginning of this year due to unknown reasons. The reason behind this removal was not initially apparent until Netflix made the announcement that War Sailor would be re-edited for broadcast as a three-part mini-series.

Netflix describes the mini-series as “ominous” and “violent,” and it is rated for mature audiences of 16 and older. Gunnar Vikene wrote and directed it.

Netflix management must have decided that footage left on the editing room floor was worthy of inclusion in collaboration with Mer Film, Rohfilm Factory, and Falkun Films because they then decided to re-release the reorganized plot.

The majority of the maritime material for this movie, and now the entire series, was shot in the waters close to Malta.

In spite of the fact that the story takes place in the Atlantic, the production of the movie would have been easier if it had been shot in the Mediterranean because of its milder climate and calmer waters.

In May of 2021, a submarine that had been used in the production of the movie was discovered in the Grand Harbour of Valletta.

Also, in September 2022, the Toronto International Film Festival presented the War Sailor feature film, which received a nomination for Best International Feature from the International Press Academy.
