Who Is Mo’Nique?
Monique Angela Hicks, better known by her stage name Mo’Nique, is a stand-up comedian and actress from the United States. In addition to the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, she has won numerous more honors.
Mo’Nique originally became well-known for her stand-up comedy performances after making her stage debut with The Queens of Comedy.
She was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Comedy Album in the year 2002. Mo’Nique began her journey into popular film and television with a central role as Nicole “Nikki” Parker in the UPN series titled The Parkers (1999-2004). Her character was one of the primary protagonists of the series.
For her role in the 2009 movie Precious, Mo’Nique won multiple accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the fourth African-American woman to receive the honor.
Mo’Nique was born on December 11, 1967, in Woodlawn, Baltimore County, Maryland. Her parents, Alice Imes, an engineer, and Steven Imes, Jr., a drug counselor, welcomed their daughter into the world that day.
There are four children in total, and she is the youngest of the group. After graduating from Baltimore County’s Milford Mill High School in 1985, Mo’Nique enrolled at Morgan State University.
She graduated from the Maryland Broadcasting Institute in 1987. Prior to becoming an actress, Monique worked in Hunt Valley, Maryland, as a customer service agent for the phone company MCI.
After being dared by her brother Steve to take the stage at an open mic night, she began her career in stand-up comedy in the downtown Baltimore location of the Comedy Factory Outlet.
