It was reported on August 15, 2016, that HBO was working on a drama series that would be based on the Perry Mason stories that had been penned by Erle Stanley Gardner.
Nic Pizzolatto, who was also set to serve as co-executive producer with Joe Horacek and Robert Downey Jr., was expected to write the script for the production. The series’ production companies were supposed to be made up of Team Downey.
It was revealed on January 14, 2019, that HBO had given the project order as a limited series. On July 22, 2020, it was confirmed that HBO had selected Perry Mason for a second season after selecting to make it a regular series.
On April 23, 2021, news broke that showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler would take over for Jones and Fitzgerald after they left the show.
