Ponniyin Selvan: I-
This is the Tamil language Indian historical film adapted from the same named 1955 novel by Indian author Kalki Krishnamurthy.
The plot dramatizes the early life of the crown prince of the Chola dynasty prince Arulmozhi Varman, later known as emperor Rajaraja I, his elder brother, the crown prince Aditha Karikalan, his love interest Nandini, and Chola princess Kundavai.
Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, and Trisha star as the lead cast members in the film. The movie has been released on September 30, 2022, and has become the fifteenth highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
Hansan: Rising Dragon-
Kim Han-min directed this South Korean war action movie that serves as the second movie of Kim’s trilogy that focuses on battles under the leadership of Yi Sun-sin.
The plot of this film revolves around the epic Battle of Hansan that occurred five years prior to the Battle of Myeongnyang which was the subject of the trilogy’s first film ‘The Admiral: Roaring Currents’. The movie released on July 27, 2022.
Catherine Called Birdy-
Lena Dunham directed this medieval comedy movie adapted from the same named 1994 novel by Karen Cushman. The plot revolves around a lord’s boisterous and headstrong daughter Catherine, who is known as Birdy, and who makes it hard for her financially destitute parent’s plan her marriage with a wealthy suitor.
But their love for her is tested when a vule suitor takes the stage. English actress Bella Ramsey portrayed the lead character in the film. Ramsey is known for starring Lyanna Mormont in HBO’s epic fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones‘.
The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 23.
Pathonpatham Noottandu-
This is the Malayalam language Indian action-period drama movie. The plot is set in the 19th century and focuses on Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicke, a fierce warrior who spent his life fighting against the social injustices upon lower cast people.
Indian actor and producer Siju Wilson portrayed the lead character in the movie. The film released on September 8, 2022.
The Northman-
Robert Eggers directed this epic historical action thriller movie that is inspired by the legend of Viking prince Amleth from Norse mythology. The plot revolves around Prince Amleth and his journey to avenge his father’s death and his mother’s abduction at the hand of his uncle which leads him to come face to face with unsettling truth centering his family.
Alexander Skarsgård has starred as Amleth in the movie with Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Claes Bang as some of the other primary cast members. The movie released on April 22, 2022, in the United States.
Pawankhind-
The plot of this Marathi language Indian historical action movie deals with India’s legendary Maratha leader Chhatrapati Shivaji and his loyal commanders.
The story is set in 1660 when the Bijapur Sultanate cornered Shivaji in the Panhala fort, but his commanders went to the extreme extent to protect the leader they loved and respected with all their lives. Chinmay Mandlekar starred as Shivaji in the movie. It was released on February 18, 2022.
Against the Ice-
The plot of this historical survival movie is set in the year 1909 and revolves around two men who find themselves fighting to survive across the vast landscape of Greenland while searching for a lost map.
‘Game of Thrones’ famed Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has starred as one of the lead roles in the movie. Against the Ice premiered on February 15, 2022, at Berlin International Film Festival and was released on March 2 this year on Netflix.

The plot of this Bengali language historical Indian movie is set during the Indian freedom fight against British imperial rule and focuses upon a heroic trio of freedom fighters- Benoy Basu, Badal Gupta, and Dinesh Chandra Gupta, known as the legendary “Benoy-Badal-Dinesh” as they plan to assassinate a tyrannical inspector named General N S Simpson by breaking into Bengal’s British India Secretariat.
Kinjal Nanda, Arna Mukhopadhyay, and Remo have starred as Benoy, Badal, and Dinesh respectively in the movie.
It was released on January 26, 2022.
