Abby Ajayi has created the upcoming British tv series ‘Riches’ which will star on ITVX in the United Kingdom and on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. Ajayi with Darcia Martin and Sebastian Thiel has directed the series.
The series was first announced anonymously on October 15, 2020, as a drama about a wealthy family struggling with a tragic event. The primary filming began in November of 2021 in London and New York.
The Premise of Riches:
The plot of the Riches revolves around a self-made man named Stephen Richards. He is a strong advocate of black-owned businesses and has built a large cosmetic empire.
But after a fatal stroke hits him, fights begin to surface to take control of his empire. The secrets of his family begin to come to forefront. And also, children from both his marriages find their lives to collide.

Hugh Quarshie-
The character of Stephen Richards is played by Ghanaian-born British actor Hugh Quarshie in the upcoming series.
He has been active in the film career since 1979. Quarshie’s film credits include ‘The Dogs of War, ‘Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend’, ‘Highlander’, ‘La Chiesa’, ‘Nightbreed’, ‘Wing Commander, ‘Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace, ‘Conspiracy of Silence, ‘Red Sparrow’, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald‘, etc.
From 1992 to 1994 Quarshie was cast in the British medical drama series Medics as Dr. Tom Carey. He starred in the Origin Story of the children’s sci-fi series ‘The Tomorrow People’ playing the role of Professor John Galt in 1992.
In 2000 he has cast as Chiron the centaur in the miniseries ‘Jason and the Argonauts. Quarshie’s biggest television role is as Ric Griffin in the British medical drama series Holby City’ from 2001 to 2020.
He reprised this role in BBC One’s medical drama series ‘Casualty’ from 2004 to 2019. In the 2021 British limited crime drama miniseries ‘Stephen’ he played Neville Lawrence. And from 2021 to 2022 Quarshie was cast as Alex in the dark comedy series ‘Breeders‘.
Deborah Ayorinde-
British-Nigerian actress Deborah Ayorinde will be seen in the series playing Nina Richards. Her film credits include ‘Bad Asses on the Bayou, ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut, ‘Where Is Kyra?’, ‘The Wizard of Lies, ‘Girls Trip’, ‘Harriet’, ‘Fatherhood‘ etc.
In the first season of MCU’s Netflix tv series ‘Luke Cage‘, she was cast as recurring character Candace Miller in 2016. In Season 3 of HBO’s anthology crime series, ‘True Detective‘ Ayorinde starred as Becca Hays in 2019.
The same year she also starred as the recurring character Dana in NBC’s American drama series ‘The Village’. In 2021 Ayorinde played the role of the primary character Livia Emory or Lucky in the horror anthology series ‘Them’. Also, she played the recurring character Rose in the second season of the series Truth Be Told’ the same year.
Sarah Niles-
British actress Sarah Niles has been cast in the upcoming series to play Claudia Richards. Her film credits include ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’, ‘London Boulevard’, ‘Austenland’, ‘Cuban Fury’, ‘Still’ etc.
From 2008 to 2009 Niles was cast as Reba in the British comedy tv series ‘Beautiful People. Melissa starred in the British tv sitcom ‘Catastrophe’ from 2015 to 2019.
Niles played the role of Dr. Sharon Fieldstone in series 2 of the American sports comedy-drama series ‘Ted Lasso‘ in 2021. Her other television credits include ‘Thorne: Sleepyhead, ‘I May Destroy You’, ‘Viewpoint’ etc.
Brendan Coyle-
Playing Gideon Havelock English-Irish actor David Coyle has been cast in the upcoming series. His film credits include ‘Ailsa’, ‘Tomorrow Never Dies, ‘The General’, ‘I Could Read the Sky’, ‘The Jacket’, ‘Offside’, ‘Perrier’s Bounty’, ‘The Raven’, ‘Noble’, ‘Me Before You, ‘Mary Queen of Scots’, ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ etc.
Coyle was first cast in the role of John Bates in British historical drama series ‘Downton Abbey’ from 2010 to 2015 for which he was nominated for a BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
His other television credits include ‘The Glass Virgin’, ‘Thief Takers’, ‘Paths to Freedom’, ‘Rebel Heart’, ‘North & South, ‘Lark Rise to Candleford’ etc.
Hermione Norris-
English actress Hermione Norris has been cast in the upcoming series as Maureen Dawson. She has previously acted in a number of films and tv series. Her film credits include ‘Born Romantic’, ‘Quicksand’, ‘Separate Lies’, ‘Love of My Life’ etc.
In 1991 Norris was cast as Anna Howe in the British period miniseries ‘Clarissa’, based on Samuel Richardson’s same-named novel.
From 1998 to 2003 and again from 2016 she has starred in the role of Karen Marsden in British comedy series ‘Cold Feet’. Norris also starred in the tv series ‘Wire in the Blood’, ‘Spooks’, ‘Kingdom’, ‘The Crimson Field’, ‘Luther’ etc.
The series Riches is set to release in the United States on Amazon Prime Video on December 2, 2022. It will be available in United Kingdom on 22nd December on ITVX.
