Telma Hopkins is an American actress and singer. She is best known for her roles as Bessie Higgins on the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies (19801982) and as Angela Robinson on the NBC sitcom Family Matters (19891998).

Hopkins was born in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Sadie Virginia (née Douglas), a maid, and Kenneth Edward Hopkins, a factory worker. She was raised in a housing project in Detroit, Michigan. She is a graduate of Cass Technical High School.

Telma Hopkins began her career as a member of the pop group The Honey Cone. The group had hits withWant Ads andStick Up“, both of which reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1980, Hopkins starred in the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies, which aired for two seasons.

The show starred Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari as two single men who dress as women in order to live in an allfemale hotel.

In 1989, Hopkins began appearing as Angela Robinson, the mother of Laura Winslow (played by Kellie Shanygne Williams), on the NBC sitcom Family Matters. She appeared in 170 episodes of the show over nine seasons.
