Panasonic Lumix GH6: Design, Features, Quality, and more!

Since the introduction of the GH Lumix series, the mirrorless filmmaking community may have shifted its attention more toward full-frame cameras. However, the Panasonic Lumix GH6 demonstrates that the Micro Four Thirds sensor format is still relevant today.

The GH6 is compact and light while offering an impressive selection of video capabilities, exceptional image quality, and some of the finest contrast-based focusing yet seen on a Panasonic camera.

It also has excellent handling and image stabilization. It also functions well as a stills camera.

It’s comfortable, even for lengthy periods. Among mirrorless cameras, the GH6 offers one of the most comfortable handles. The Micro Four Thirds camera is more significant than Panasonic’s S5 full-frame camera.

The larger size is for heat dissipation, allowing the camera to collect high-resolution video with no time limit constantly.

It is hefty, and if you are not a supporter of cameras with a lens that protrudes out with such weight, there are better choices for you. When shooting with this camera, the buttons and controls are sturdy as they are twisted and pressed. It is dust and water-resistant, so it is ideal for use outside.

Focus and BalanceĀ

The Lumix GH6 appears to be designed for portable use. The level gauge overlay display has an accelerometer built-in to indicate lean and tilt, flashing green when you’re perfectly level.

Of course, this function is useless if you have a solid tripod or gimbal, but if all you have is your camera and your feet, it’s a helpful tool.

The camera uses contrast-detection autofocus. This method of focusing is becoming largely outdated, but the GH6 does an excellent job with it. A blue overlay will emphasize the regions of the image in sharp focus, and repeatedly pushing the autofocus button can switch between different subjects in focus.

When you manually rotate the focus lens, a gauge shows the focal distance and, more importantly, the direction you’re changing the focus. This is the type of handy feature that you’ll find difficult to live without once you’ve got it.

Image and Video quality of Panasonic Lumix GH6

One thing that strikes me as unique is that it is more of a video camera than a photo one. This is one of the factors behind the GH6’s high price. The GH6 can take 5760 x 4320 pixels in 10-bit color at 24, 25, or 29.97 frames per second for as long as you need at a decent 200 Mbps transmission rate.

There’s a mechanical shutter, the typical M/A/P/S mode choices, and a variety of settings for specialized stills photography, including the 100MP as mentioned above image-stacking High-Resolution mode and some insanely rapid burst shooting.

conclusion

If you’re used to a full-frame sensor, you should keep it, but the GH6 is a tremendous improvement if you’re already utilizing MFT. The Panasonic GH6 is an excellent video mirrorless camera.

The 5.7K resolution is just fantastic. Furthermore, the GH6 filmed the high-resolution video for almost an hour on a 95-degree day, when many mirrorless cameras struggle to stay calm.

The quicker, smaller sensor avoids rolling the shutter and keeps the camera from overheating. Its excellent stability makes it a perfect run-and-gun option. ProRes support enables more advanced workflows. Finally, if you’re looking for a nice update, the GH6 is a great option, but Panasonic needs to improve battery performance.
