House of the Dragon Young Cast Members and Their Characters

The first season of ‘House of the Dragon concluded on October 23, 2022, with a big blast of all kinds of emotions and a painful yearning for the next season. ‘House of the Dragon’ is the long-awaited spin-off prequel of one of the most loved fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones of recent times.

A lot of excitement, coupled with anticipation, worked around the series, more so after HBO released an official trailer on July 20 on YouTube. And quite reasonably, these past two months were a heck of a dramatic and explosive two months for Thrones fans.

Only now as the season has wrapped up, we have got the time to look through what other roles the young cast members of the series joining in the second half of its timeline, have acted before.

‘House of the Dragon’ chronicles the events of Westeros one hundred seventy-two years before Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke), the last Targaryen aspiring to sit the Iron Throne, was born.

When the series opens, an ailing king Viserys I Targaryen is dwelling between his house enjoying the highest kind of power and his poor health foreshadowing an impending death. Not having a son, he declares his firstborn child and daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen his heir.

But when the king’s hand Otto Hightower to exercise his hunger for power, set forward his daughter and Rhaenyra’s best friend Alicent to marry the King after the death of his first wife, the family begins rotting beneath the skin as Alicent’s elder son is manipulated to foster the idea that he is the rightful heir of the kingdom and Rhaenyra, as well as her children, are his and his siblings’ enemies.

Thus a happy family picture, which seemed to be the image of the house in the sixth episode when they were seen training together and joking among themselves and in the eighth episode when Rhaenyra and Alicent seemed to try mending their breaches for their bedridden father and husband, was actually a viperous one revealing its true face when in the season finale a brother of one side becomes the cause of the death of the brother of another side.

“What are children, but a weakness? A folly? Futility? Through them, you imagine you cheat the great darkness of its victory. You will persist forever, in some form or another. As if they will keep you from the dust. But for them, you surrender what you should not. You may know what is the right thing to be done, but love stays the hand. Love is a downfall.”

We heard these words uttered by the notorious Larys Strong in the background as his father was escorting his elder brother to Harrenhal to restore his son’s reputation, where Larys has plotted their death.

A number of times throughout the events of ‘House of the Dragon’ we see this motif being emerged, especially after Rhaenyra and Alicent’s children grow up. But do these parents really surrender “what they should not” to their children? Or for their own petty ambition? Alice’s eldest son Aegon II who had no interest to be king is a great example of that and so is Alicent herself to a greater extent.

The first half of ‘House of the Dragon’ was reigned by young Rhaenyra and Young Alicent along with their other cousins as they deal with their personal trajectories in a very hostile ambiance of Westeros for children to grow up.

The second half began with the episode ‘The Princess and the Queen’ in which Rhaenyra and Alicent grow up and begin to fight for and protect their own children with their all might. ‘House of the Dragon’ has become a much talked about series with the positive reviews generally overpowering the criticisms.

Among these, the one thing that has been subjected to most discussions is the time jumps. We saw the biggest time jump in that above-mentioned episode in which we see Rhaenyra’s two boy children with another just being born and Alicent’s two sons and a daughter in their teenage.

The absence of Milly Alcock, who played young Rhaenyra, and Emily Carey, who played young Alicent Hightower, was largely compensated by another bunch of young cast members taking the focus and who will be having bigger roles in the upcoming events of the series.
