What is The True Story Behind the Film?

The Swimmers
The Guardian

Syria was plunged into civil violence in 2015, taking hundreds of deaths and driving many more to escape for their safety. Regrettably, Yusra and Sarah Mardini, who lived on Damascus’ outskirts, were in the same boat.

They boarded the packed ship bound for Greece, but somehow it broke down in the middle of the Aegean Sea, leaving the sisters and two others to swim with the boat until they landed at Lesbos.

They finally relocated to Berlin with their family, who had fled Syria as well. Sarah had an unexpected shoulder injury during the event, forcing her to abandon her swimming career. Yusra carried on the sisters’ dream after swimming in the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning a 100m butterfly heat race alongside four other swimmers on the IOC Refugee squad.

The Swimmers is the tale of two siblings who fought their way from a war-torn nation to a new place while holding to the little chance they had left, and Netflix is getting ready to visually deliver it to viewers.

Everything Else We Know
