Halle Berry is an American actress and she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002 for her performance in Monster’s Ball, becoming the first and, as of 2020, the only woman of color to win the award. She is one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood and has been involved in several high-profile relationships.

Berry was born Maria Halle Berry on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Judith Ann (née Hawkins), a psychiatric nurse, and Jerome Jesse Berry, a hospital attendant. She has an older sister, Heidi Berry-Henderson. Her mother, who is white, has English and German ancestry and is a descendant of Mayflower passenger and Puritan William Brewster.

Berry’s parents divorced when she was four years old, and she and her older sister were raised by her mother and stepfather, Ira Berry, a bus driver. She has said that her mother “didn’t allow us to act out,” and that she was “very strict” and “very protective.” Berry grew up in Oakwood, Ohio.

In high school, she ran track and played softball. She worked in a children’s hospital as a volunteer and was a cheerleader for the Cleveland Indians baseball team. She later attended Cuyahoga Community College. Berry’s first acting role was in an episode of the soap opera “Living Dolls” in 1989, although she did not pursue a career in acting until the early 1990s.

She appeared in a number of made-for-television films, such as “The Flintstones”, “Solomon & Sheba”, and “Catwalk”. She made her film debut in the 1991 Jungle Fever, playing the role of Vivian, a drug addict.

Berry’s breakthrough film role was in the 2001 romantic drama Monster’s Ball, in which she played the wife of a man on death row, for which she was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first and, as of 2020, the only woman of color to win the award.

She followed this with roles in the action films Swordfish (2001) and Die Another Day (2002), the latter being her first appearance as Bond girl Jinx Johnson. She also won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award for Monster’s Ball.

In 2002, Berry portrayed Dorothy Dandridge in the HBO biopic Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.

Berry’s next film role was in the 2003 thriller Perfect Stranger, opposite Bruce Willis. She also appeared in the independent film Mahogany, directed by Berry’s then-boyfriend, Antoine Fuqua.

In 2007, Berry appeared in the thriller Things We Lost in the Fire, opposite Benicio del Toro, and in the independent film Perfect Stranger, which was directed by Bruce Willis. She also starred in the action film Kidnap, playing a mother who takes her son back from his kidnappers.

In 2018, Berry starred in the heist film Proud Mary, and in the same year, she also appeared in the revenge thriller Acrimony. In 2019, she had a leading role in the thriller film Serenity, opposite Matthew McConaughey. In 2020, Berry starred in the thriller film Bruised, which she also wrote and directed.
