Little Women Removed from Netflix in Vietnam

The South Korean drama Little Women has been removed from Netflix in Vietnam. Little Women, a drama currently airing on tvN, has been taken off from Netflix for Vietnamese viewers as of October 6 in response to a request from Vietnamese authorities.

The television show tells the story of three underprivileged sisters who are close and how they fearlessly take on Korea’s richest family. It also shows how they get involved in the case of 70 billion won going missing.

The controversy centers on the recently broadcast eighth episode of the show, in which a Korean military veteran boasts about the exploits of Korean soldiers during the Vietnam War when more than 320,000 Koreans deployed to Vietnam to help US forces. The veteran boasted, “In our greatest clashes, the Korean troops’ kill-to-death ratio was 20:1. For every Korean soldier killed, 20 Viet Cong were also killed.”

Why Little Women was Removed from Netflix in Vietnam?

According to a document (filed) by the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information under the Ministry of Information and Communications, the movie was taken down from Netflix in Vietnam on Thursday, a Netflix spokeswoman said. According to a letter obtained by the Vietnamese newspaper Truoi Tre and obtained by Bloomberg, the series violated Clause 4, Article 9 of the Vietnamese Press Law, according to Vietnam’s Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information.

The law forbids the media from disseminating information that calls for war, violates Vietnam’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, falsifies history, downplays the country’s achievements during the Revolution, or insults the country.
