Taika Waititi had some Extreme Ideas for Thor: Love and Thunder

When it comes to directing movies, Taika Waititi is famous for his outrageous sense of style and comedy. It is just this outrageous flair that Taika brought to the Marvel world when he agreed to helm the third Thor movie, titled Thor: Ragnarok.

The film brought Taika’s aesthetic and tone to the Thor series, helping to propel it to the forefront of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as one of the most financially successful entries in the brand’s history.

This resulted in Taika being given the go-ahead to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, a film that, although earning mixed reviews, was nevertheless full of the unique flair characteristic of Taika’s work and was a financial success.

Andy Park, director of visual development at Marvel, provided some insight into Taika’s creative process and said that the filmmaker might come up with some very outlandish concepts at times. Park discussed this topic in a recent interview.

Andy recalled that Taika Waititi had specific ideas when they were creating Thor: Love and Thunder that were far too extreme, and they had to pull him back a little bit so that they could finish the movie. Andy was discussing this with Syfy.

Andy admits that although Taika tends to leap toward the extreme end more frequently, it is because of his leaps that they always end up somewhere new. Even if they have to pull Taika back just a tad in order to make it work, it is still utterly uncharted territory every time. The full quote from Andy is as follows:

“Because I know that whenever I collaborate with Taika, I’m in for a trip, it was a lot of joy to go back into the Thor universe with him. He is such a good time. He is always making jokes, and overall, he is just really entertaining.

However, his views are quite radical and unorthodox. He is not one to shy away from new experiences. There may be instances in which we experience fear and remark something along the lines of “Ahhh, I don’t know…that may go a bit too far design-wise.”

Therefore, he will encourage us in the manner of “Hey, let’s go there.” We wouldn’t have identified this pivot without going to the extreme, regardless of whether that ends up being the design or whether we pivot back a little bit. That just about sums up Taika in a nutshell, doesn’t it?”

It is still unknown whether or not Taika Waititi will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in light of the polarising reception that Love and Thunder received. Still, one thing is sure: regardless of where he goes, he will continue to be his extreme Taika self.
