Marcia Gay Harden, an Academy award winner, and Skylar Astin, who played the lead mother-son duet in Pitch Perfect, are the stars of So Help Me Todd. Margaret Wright, a meticulous lawyer in a reputable law firm, is played by Harden. She enjoys abiding by the law and the rules and never accepts anything less than the best.

To better his life, Margaret recruits her rebellious son when he appears out of sorts. Todd (Astin), the second member of the mother-son duo, is Margaret’s sole child.

He is unfocused, relaxed, and thinks that the law should be bent—precisely the reverse of his mother. He mostly depends on his wit and street smarts, which, although not always legal, have frequently kept him out of trouble.

What Is the story of So Help Me Todd?

So Help Me Todd
New York Post

Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin play meticulous, razor-sharp lawyer Margaret Wright (Harden) and Todd (Astin), her brilliant but aimless son, who she appoints as the in-house investigator for her law firm.

Todd is the poor man’s version of the well-to-do Wright family. He was a laid-back, intelligent former private investigator who ran into trouble when his license was suspended due to his flexible view of the law.

Todd’s improvised, by-the-seat-of-his-wrinkled-pants approach to navigating tricky circumstances contrasts sharply with Margaret’s passion for perfection and strict respect for the law.

When Todd unintentionally teams up with his mother on a case, she is surprised to find herself genuinely impressed by – and proud of – his creative ability to dig out information using his charm and broad technical knowledge.

Margaret asks her son to join her company when she finally finds a means to set him on a “suitable” route to leading an adult, financially secure life she approves of. Todd concurs since it will allow him to regain his driving privileges and resume doing the work he excels at and enjoys.

Working together is a critical first step in repairing mother and son’s brittle, dysfunctional connection. They could even leave with a more profound knowledge of one another at this pivotal moment in their lives. But whether Todd and Margaret can accept one another for who they are is entirely another matter.
