Dwayne Johnson: Must Watch Movies

Former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson is a renowned commercially successful American actor. His ring name is The Rock and he contributed largely to the development of WWE in the Attitude Era and its consecutive success.

Besides starring in lead action hero roles in a number of films, Johnson has also starred as the main character in the comedy series ‘Ballers’. He is one of the highest-paid actors in the world.

The Mummy Returns (2001)-

This is an adventure horror film in which Johnson made his acting debut by playing the role of Mathayus of Akkad aka The Scorpion King.

Get Smart (2008)-

Peter Segal’s action spy comedy movie casts Johnson in the role of Agent 23 as he co-stars with Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in the lead roles.

The Other Guys (2010)-

This is a buddy cop action comedy movie in which Johnson portrays the character of Detective Christopher Danson.

Fast Five (2011)-

This is the fifth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise which serves as the sequel to the 2009 movie ‘Fast & Furious’ introduces Dwayne Johnson in the role of a Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs, a role that he later reprises in the sequel and spin-off movies ‘Fast & Furious 6’, ‘Furious 7’, ‘The Fate of the Furious, and ‘Hobbs & Shaw’.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)-

This is an American sci-fi action adventure movie that is the sequel to the 2008 movie ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth, adapted from ‘The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne.

Johnson stars as a former Navy code breaker Hank who is the stepfather of Sean, played by Josh Hutcherson.

Snitch (2013)-

In this action thriller movie, Johnson is cast in the role of John Matthews co-starring with Barry Pepper, Jon Bernthal, and Susan Sarandon.

Pain & Gain (2013)-

In this action comedy movie, Johnson plays the role of Paul Doyle, a member of the Sun Gym gang upon which the story is based.

His character is inspired by the real-life members of the gang Carl Weekes, Jorge Delgado, and Stevenson Pierre.

Empire State (2013)-

This is a crime drama in which Johnson’s role is that of a detective named James Ransome as he co-stars with Liam Hemsworth and Emma Roberts.

Hercules (2014)-

In this action adventure fantasy movie, Johnson portrays the titular role of Hercules, son of Zeus who is known for his extreme physical strength and far-ranging adventures.

San Andreas (2015)-

In this disaster film, Johnson plays the role of a helicopter rescue pilot of the Los Angeles Fire Department named Ray Gaines.

Central Intelligence (2016)-

Buddy action comedy movie ‘Central Intelligence casts Johnson in the role of a CIA agent and hand-to-hand combatant who in his high school had been a bullied, socially awkward, friendless extremely obese boy.

Baywatch (2017)-

In this Seth Gordon’s action comedy movie Johnson stars as Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle & Jumanji: The Next Level (2017 and 2019)-

Based on the same named children’s book, this is a fantasy adventure comedy movie in which Johnson is cast as archaeologist and explorer Dr. Xander Bravestone or Smolder. He reprises this role in the sequel movie ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’.

Rampage (2018)-

In this sci-fi action adventure monster movie, Johnson stars as an ex-US Army Special Forces soldier Davis Okoye who is also a primatologist and an anti-poaching unit’s head.

Skyscraper (2018)-

This too is an action thriller movie in which Johnson plays the lead role of former US Marine Will Sawyer who is on the journey of rescuing his family from a Hongkong skyscraper.

Jungle Cruise (2021)-

This is a fantasy adventure movie that is inspired by Walt Disney’s theme park attraction of the jungle cruise. The plot of the movie recounts an alternate history revolving around a small riverboat captain who in the quest for the Tree of Life, takes a scientist along with her brother through a jungle.

Johnson plays the role of the captain of the steamboat skipper- Frank Wolff with Emily Blunt starring as botanist Dr. Lily Houghton.

Red Notice (2021)-

This is a recent action comedy movie that serves as the third collaboration between director and producer Rawson Marshall Thurber and Johnson.

The plot of the movie deals with an FBI agent who, against his wish, has to team up with an infamous art robber to get hold of another art robber who is even more notorious.

Johnson plays the FBI agent John Hartley in the movie co-starring with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. The movie will be followed by two sequels that are under development and in which Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot will expectedly reprise their roles.
