Megan Thee Stallion Says She Does Not Need to Hide Behind Her Alter Ego

Published by

In a new interview with New York Magazine, the rapper Megan Thee Stallion opened up about tapping into her emotional side while recording her upcoming album Traumazine, revealing that she won’t be performing the playlist in character or actually as Megan Thee Stallion but instead as herself on her upcoming tour in support of the LP (no North American dates announced yet).

“My alter egos were the people I had to be at the time to be like my armor, like my shield,” she said. “I must have been Hot Girl Meg back then. I must have been Tina Snow at the time.

I must have been Megan Thee Stallion at the time. I love this album because it feels like it’s just me talking. It’s just Megan. I don’t have to be someone else.”

Meg also emphasized the importance of telling your “own story” with your latest work. “I can’t let everyone tell me what they think of me,” she said. “I have to tell my own story the way I feel it should be told. I can’t leave my fate in someone else’s hands.”

What more did Megan Thee Stallion share in the interview?

She also explained where the album’s title Traumazine came from: “Everyone has gone through their own trauma in their own way, and for me, Traumazine is me facing things that I’ve been running from myself.”

“It’s comforting to know that other people are going through what you may be feeling. When something happens to people, they feel like, oh my god, this is just me.

This is not normal or I am probably the only person in the world who feels this way. But hearing someone else talk about something you’re probably feeling is comforting and more familiar,” she added. “That’s why people resonate with hearing other people’s stories.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Meg discussed her ambitions outside of music, specifically breaking into Hollywood. She confirmed that she has a role in the new Marvel/Disney+ series She-Hulk and will also appear in the upcoming A24 movie Fucking Identical Twins.

Her dream part, she says, would be taking over the role of Isis from Gabrielle Union in the reboot of the Bring It On cheerleading franchise (“I’d be perfect for that”). But Meg also sees herself being more involved behind the scenes, like Queen Latifah and Ice Cube.

“Looking at them inspires me to go beyond music,” she said. “I don’t feel like I’m just going to be an actress, I feel like I’m going to be a director as well as a producer.”
