Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus: Cambridge Audio was previously associated with only hi-fi systems and amplifiers. However, in recent years, the British company has expanded into the world of truly wireless earbuds.

The Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus was released on March 9, 2021, and was initially priced at $139.95 / £119.95 (approximately AU$185). However, they have received a permanent price reduction, bringing them down to $99.95 / £99.95.

Design

The Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus looks similar to its predecessors, arriving in black or white, with bullet-shaped buds and a flip-top charging case. Though that charging case now has a matte finish and feels a little sleeker than the previous generation.

The flat outer housings double as physical control buttons, allowing you to adjust music playback and volume, answer calls and invoke your device’s voice assistant. There are a few distant button presses to remember. But Cambridge Audio includes a small card with all the combinations in the box that you can slip into your wallet or purse.

Audio Quality

The Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus is the way to go if you’re looking for high-quality audio. These earbuds, which feature 5.8mm dynamic drivers, have a lot of dynamism and character. With a lively presentation that will have you tapping your feet.

When listening on my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, the thumping low end on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Bonita Applebaum” was turned up to 11. Which was shocking at first but then stimulated rhythmic head-nods as the record played out. It was amazing to hear how well-balanced the bass was and how pronounced Q-soft-spoken Tip’s vocals sounded.

Connectivity

Bluetooth 5 provides connectivity, with support for aptX and AAC codecs – and pairing was simple. You only need to attach one earbud to your device, and the second earbud will ask to connect to its sibling. You only need to do this once, and the second bud will pair as soon as it is turned on.

Battery Life

The Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus provides up to nine hours of battery life from the earbuds alone, with the case providing an additional four charges. This translates to a total battery life of 45 hours, though you must be in Low Power mode to achieve this.

The charging case is delightfully thin and looks like a small backpack. It fits easily into any pocket, but it scratches just as easily. Five LED lights indicate the charging status of the case. When fully charged via USB-C, the case can recharge the buds four times before recharging.

 Features

The Galaxy Wearable app includes a number of customization options for the buds. Depending on your device, this is where you’ll customize the controls, tweak the sound, cycle through the distinct levels of each listening mode, and access a variety of other goodies.

A special Gaming mode in the Labs setting reduces audio lag when gaming on Galaxy devices. Then there’s Auto Switch, which allows you to instantly switch between Galaxy devices, and PowerShare, which allows you to wirelessly charge the buds by placing the charging case on the back of a compatible Galaxy smartphone.
