The production of an original animated film based on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Netflix was announced by Nickelodeon on February 5th, 2019. The movie and the series were planned independently. Several members of the film’s production team also contributed to the Rise of the TMNT television series.
The first summary of the film was published in a Deadline Netflix 2021 film slate piece on January 12, 2021. Ant Ward declared the movie’s release date on March 30th, 2021, but promptly erased the post from Instagram for an unspecified reason.
The film was originally scheduled for the summer 2021 release; however, it was postponed. Andy Suriano confirmed the completion of filming on Instagram on April 7th, 2022, and Netflix revealed the film’s August 5th, 2022, release date on April 27th, 2022.
As part of a Netflix Family Summer 2022 promotion, the movie’s official logo, two seconds-long movie clips, and the first photos were all made available on June 30, 2022. The movie teaser was made available on YouTube by the Netflix After School channel on July 6th, 2022.
