Rap Sh!t is an upcoming American comedy streaming television series created by Issa Rae for HBO Max. Hoorae Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment are responsible for the show’s production. The series premiered on HBO Max on July 21, 2022, following its debut at the American Black Film Festival on June 18, 2022.

Rae, who serves as the show’s head writer and executive producer, told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere on Wednesday,

“I came up with the show while we were doing season five [ofInsecure], and it’s always been gestating in my mind. I always wanted to do a show in the music world so I was like, ‘What’s a show that I want to watch right now that feels fun, of the moment, and that’s a reflection of the culture right now?’”

The Plot

While watching the trailer, we learn which direction the series will take. The plot revolves around two high school friends named Shawna and Mia. They are tired of their lives and the work they have to do to make ends meet.

Shawna, a struggling rapper who works in a hotel, and Mia, a single mother and rapper who works multiple jobs to support herself and her four-year-old son.

They only come across a lot of rappers who are wealthy. They form a hip-hop duo in order to change their financial situation and to feel as if they can do at least what their male counterpart rappers do. Time will tell whether or not their bet on the music industry pays off.

  • Shawna, a struggling rapper who works at a hotel, is played by Aida Osman.
  • Mia, a single mother, and rapper who works multiple jobs to support herself and her 4-year-old son is played by KaMillion.
  • Jonica Booth as Chastity, a “sex work manager”.
  • Devon Terrell as Cliff, Shawna’s long-distance boyfriend who is a law student in New York
