Badru is the name of the daughter featured in the movie. Though of Indian descent, Bhatt holds British citizenship. Her father Mahesh Bhatt is a renowned film director and producer and her elder sister Pooja Bhatt is a renowned actress.

Bhatt began her acting career with the 1999 psychological horror action thriller movie ‘Sangharsh’ in which she portrayed the younger version of the protagonist, starred by Preity Zinta.

Her breakthrough role was as Shanaya Singhania in 2012 in Karan Johar’s coming-of-age romantic comedy film Student of the Year’ where she co-starred with Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan.

Though the movie was successful, Bhatt was criticized for being incapable of standard acting, a matter that she proved utterly false through her later films.

It is precisely the cringe storyline of ‘Student of the Year’ that did not allow her to flourish her acting skill which is why when films like ‘Highway’, ‘Udta Punjab’, ‘Raazi’, ‘Dear Zindagi’ and ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ came, they secured Bhatt’s place in the heart of both fans and critics alike.

In 2014 she co-starred with Randeep Hooda as Veera Tripathi, a rich daughter who finds herself on a road journey with an abductor Mahabir Bhati in the road drama movie ‘Highway’. The same year she also portrayed Ananya Swaminathan in the same named film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s ‘2 States: The Story of My Marriage’ and Kavya Pratap Singh in the romantic comedy ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania opposite Varun Dhawan.

In 2015 she co-starred with Shahid Kapoor in the role of Alia Arora in the romantic comedy ‘Shaandaar’. The next year she played the role of Tia Malik co-starring with Siddharth Malhotra, Rishi Kapoor, and Fawad Khan in the family drama ‘Kapoor & Sons.

The same year she portrayed Bauria in the crime drama ‘Udta Punjab’ in which Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor also starred. Her other film in 2016 was coming of age drama ‘Dear Zindagi’ where she acted alongside Shah Rukh Khan as Kaira, a young woman struggling with mental issues.

In 2017 she again acted opposite Varun Dhawan in the romantic comedy ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ in the role of Vaidehi Trivedi. The next year she played the lead role of Sehmat Khan Syed in the spy action thriller movie ‘Raazi’ for which she received a number of accolades including a Filmfare Awards for Best Actress and a nomination for Filmfare Awards for Critics Award for Best Actress.

In 2019 she co-starred with Ranveer Singh as Safeena Firdausi in the musical drama ‘Gully Boy’ which was selected for Indian entry in the 92nd Academy Awards as Best International Feature Film though it was not nominated.

The same year she also starred as Roop Chaudhry in the romantic drama ‘Kalank’ which also starred Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditya Roy Kapur.

In 2020 Bhatt played the role of Aarya Desai in Mahesh Bhatt’s action thriller movie ‘Sadak 2’. In 2022 she portrayed the titular role in the biographical crime movie ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ for which she has been critically acclaimed. She has also played Sita in Telegu’s movie ‘RRR’ this year.

Apart from ‘Darling’, her upcoming films are ‘Brahmastra’, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’, and ‘Heart of Stone, the latter being an American spy drama in which Bhatt will be seen co-starring with Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan.
