May El Calamawy is a Bahraini-born Egyptian-Palestinian actress and she was born on October 228, 1986. Since 2015, May has established herself as an actor in the United States. May gained popularity with the American television series Ramy where she had a role as Dena Hassan and in Jeremy Slater’s show Moon Knight as Layla El-Faouly.
May suffers from alopecia areata(an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles) and her real-life struggle with alopecia areata was also shown in her reel life character Dena Hassan in the second seaport of the show Ramy.

May completed her high school in Bahrain and after her father’s wish she went on to pursue an industrial design course in Boston, Massachusetts. May had developed a love for acting when she was a kid and watched the 1992 film Death Becomes Her, so her acting itch took her to the United States to pursue her dream acting career, and then she left Dubai where she resided for 5 years.
She has also earned a B.A. in theatre studies degree from Emerson College where she completed the course and later went on to attend the William Esper Studio in New York.
May Calamawy made her acting debut in 2013 with Tobe Hooper’s film Djinn, and it was the first horror film that was produced in the United Arab Emirates. Her first assignment was a recurring role in the American drama miniseries The Long Road Home.
