‘Love and Leashes’ is just another attempt by a streaming giant to entice viewers with Korean entertainment. Regrettably, this time the effort is only partially rewarded. Love and Leashes get full points for bringing a taboo subject into the public and discussing s*xual freedom and acceptance.

However, the treatment is mostly dull and drab, and by the time it displays some sparks, it’s already late and your attention has waned. Nonetheless, it gets praise for confronting a topic about which people aren’t particularly vocal in a bubbly and light-hearted manner.

This romantic comedy stars Jung Ji Hoo and Jung Ji Woo, two office co-workers who happen to have the same name. Jung Ji Hoo accepts a position as PR manager at an online educational organization, reporting to his co-worker Jung Ji Woo. Secrets spill out as Woo opens a box meant for the other Hoo by accident.

The box’s contents expose the PR manager’s s*xual proclivities as well as his desire to BDSM (s*xual aspects that include dominance, submission, and masochism). Attraction, rather than love, bites both of them, and they make a deal to start a romance in which the lady will be his master, and the two of them will explore their s*xual obsessions without being physically intimate. When the PR manager declines a date invitation, the story takes a turn.

‘Love and Leashes’ deals with a topic that is widely discussed in Western countries but is a novel concept in this country. With the world reducing in size, whispers regarding BDSM have begun, but no one publicly discusses such a forbidden subject here.

It’s crucial for audiences to have a connection to the film’s concept, and Love and Leashes may not find many takers based purely on this. But, aside from that, it’s a film that merely touches the surface of a topic that the entire world is aware of but rarely acknowledged.

This rom-com stars Seo Hyun and Lee Jun Young and is based on a popular Korean webtoon. Seo Hyun is a member of the U-Kiss group and Seo Hyun is a member of the popular K-pop girl band Girl’s Generation. Both actors have given heartfelt performances; it is simply the directing that has fallen short.

Hoo’s sensitivity and submissiveness are well-represented, and the writer deserves credit for not making him a sly figure. He has been presented as a man in complete control of his s*xuality. Seo Hyun, who plays Woo, delivers a powerful performance as someone who is unfamiliar with BDSM yet goes to great lengths to learn more about it.

Many myths about BDSM’s dominance and submissive components are also debunked in the film. In the end, it’s a film about s*xual freedom and s*xual preferences. Despite the fact that it is not as exciting as contemporary Korean dramas, this film gets a dekko for the overwhelming impact of its theme.
