Must Watch Shows Like Ginny & Georgia

Netflix’s big hit ‘Ginny & Georgia’ is on the way with a second season and the subscribers’ anticipation about when they can expect it to hit the platform is extremely high. Created by Sarah Lampert ‘Ginny & Georgia’ is a comedy-drama that will give you the engaging feel of a comedy about the life of a teenage and also a kind of warmth oozing from the unusual bond between an unusual mother and her daughter.

The series first premiered on the forerunning streaming platform on February 24, 2021. It got renewed for a newer season in April, 2021.

‘Ginny & Georgia‘ is about Ginny (played by Antonia Gentry), a teenage high school student struggling to survive in the oppressive competition of high school about everything and Georgia (played hy Brianne Howey), Ginny’s cool mom whom everyone talks about.

After her husband’s death Georgia comes to a New England town with her daughter Ginny and son Austin. She wants to give them a better life than what she had. Throughout the series we will be able to watch the mother daughter duo supporting each other in their individual issues of life.

But while waiting for the second season of ‘Ginny & Georgia’ to arrive, we can atleast watch some more shows that are quite like this one.

Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)-

When it comes to mother-daughter duo, the first name that comes to our mind is of course ‘Gilmore Girls‘. The series premiered on October 5, 2000, on Warner Bros. where it streamed for six seasons before being transferred to The CW for the seventh and final season that came on May 15, 2007.

It follows the life of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore- mother and daughter and their life struggle where they support and give advice to each other. Lorelai was sixteen years old when she became pregnant with Rory.

The recent series ‘Ginny and Georgia’ is very much inspired from this old critically acclaimed show though in the new one the drawbacks of having a mother who is not very mature than her daughter have also been explored.

A sequel to the series named ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’, a mini series also released on November 25, 2016. In both the original series and the sequel Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel have played the roles of the independent mother and the precocious daughter respectively.

Good Girls (2018-2021)-

This American crime comedy drama was premiered on NBC on February 26, 2018 and ran for four seasons till July 22, 2021. The series focuses on three struggling suburban mothers living in Michigan two of whom are sisters.

From a long time they have been suffering from poverty and now tired fighting. The three decides to rob a supermarket. But although their robbery comes out successful, the store manager happens to recognize one of the women.

Eventually they become entangled into a complicated chain of debts, secrets, family crisis, and mob gangs for what they expected to be only an unusual heist in a supermarket. Christiana Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman star as the three mothers in the series.

My So-Called Life (1994-1995)-

This 90’s American teen drama premiered on August 25, 1994 on ABC and ended abruptly on January 26, 1995 leaving us with a cliffhanger despite being critically acclaimed for its portrayal of life in adolescence period and the characterization of main character Angela Chase.

The setting of the plot is a fictional Liberty High School located in Three Rivers, a fictional suburb near Pittsburgh of Pennsylvania. It features the social circle of Angela along with the emotional journey of a number of teenagers who are in it.

The character of Angela is played by Claire Danes. ‘My So-Called Life’ received some major awards nominations. Claire Danes won the Golden Globe Award for her acting in the series.

Dead to Me (2019- present)-

The dark comedy show revolves around two women Jen and Judy who build a bonding of friendship during their therapy. Jen is recently widowed and is struggling with her loss and temper issue.

Judy is also undergoing therapy for coping with her grief that she claims is because of the death of her fiancé. But the reality is something different which both of them must deal with beside their increasing friendship. Christiana Applegate and Linda Cardellini star as Jen and Judy respectively.

‘Dead to Me‘ first arrived on Netflix on May 3, 2019. The third season of the series was renewed in July, 2020 which will air sometime in 2022 after being delayed for the pandemic.

Teenage Bounty Hunters (2020)-

This American comedy drama TV Series is about fraternal twins Sterling Wesley and Blair Wesley. The twins become involves with bounty hunting for Bowser Simmons, an old bounty hunter to pay for the repairing of their father’s truck which they dented. This involvement leads to further consequences.

Maddie Phillips and Anielica Bette Fellini play the roles of Sterling, the fellowship leader of Willingham Academy school and Blair, the comparatively more rebellious sister respectively. The series arrived on Netflix on August 14, 2020.
