Sania Mirza to retire after the 2022 season. Mirza has won 6 Grand Slam titles and is the first Indian to make the top 30 in the WTA singles list. She made the announcement soon after losing a doubles match at the Australian Open.

“India’s first female tennis star Sania Mirza on Wednesday announced her retirement plans, confirming that the 2022 season is her last.”

The Indian tennis player has won six Grand Slams and topped the WTA doubles list. Mirza is also the first Indian to make it into the top 30 on the WTA singles list. Mirza has announced her retirement from tennis after her first defeat in the women’s doubles event at the ongoing Australian Open.

The 35-year-old said after her game was over: “There are reasons for this. It’s not so easy to say ‘OK I’m not playing. I think it will take a long time to recover. Today my knee is so bad and I do not mean that’s the reason we lost it, but it will take time to recover as I get older.”

“And to find out what motivates me daily. Power and strength are no longer of the same intensity. There are more days than ever before when I don’t want to keep doing this. I keep saying I will play until I enjoy it. Now I don’t know whether I fully enjoy it or not.”

“I still want to play the season, because I’m happy to play for a year. I tried my best to come back, stay healthy, lose weight and be a good example to moms and new moms. I worked very hard to follow my dreams. At this time of year, I don’t feel my body having the best days and not sure of playing ahead”Mirza said.

In the women’s doubles event, Sania Mirza and her Ukrainian opponent Nadia Kichenok lost for the first time. The Kazakh Juan-Tamara Zidansek duo of Slovenia defeated Mirza-Kichenok 6-4, 7-6.

A good example

In addition to the Grand Slam title, other high points in her career were amazingly achieved.
