The Crown Season 5 Updates: Despite rumors that the show’s fifth season will be it’s last, Netflix has confirmed that Season 5 will be the series’ final season. The major difficulty is that, due to coronavirus-related delays, fans will have to wait longer than normal for it to return.
Netflix has already begun announcing members of the new royal cast, despite the delays. (In Seasons 5 and 6, Olivia Colman and her co-stars will be replaced by different actors, much as Claire Foy and Matt Smith were in Seasons 1 and 2.) The Crown Season 5 begins filming in July, but it will not air until 2022.
The Crown’s producers confirmed to Variety that production on the fifth season will begin in July. Even as lockdown restrictions in the United Kingdom begin to lift, filming will take place at the traditional Elstree Studios, just north of London, and is likely to adhere to strict COVID-19 rules.
Season 5 is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2022, according to Deadline. Production began this summer. The coronavirus epidemic, on the other hand, was not to blame for the delay. The break was apparently pre-planned all along.
Following the release of Season 4 last fall, fans will have to wait almost a year for the next installment. Of course, this isn’t the first time The Crown has taken a long sabbatical; between Seasons 2 and 3, there was a two-year gap as well.

What does the Star Cast say About The Crown Season 5?
Despite Netflix’s announcement in January 2020 that The Crown’s fifth season would be it’s final, the streaming service stated months later that the series will get one more chapter.
“As we discussed the plots for Series 5, it became evident that in order to do credit to the story’s richness and complexity, we needed to go back to the original concept and do six seasons,” Peter Morgan said in a statement.
Season 6 is set to take the plot into the early 2000s, therefore Season 5 might cover the late 1990s, according to Variety, but this has yet to be confirmed.
From the beginning, The Crown was supposed to endure six seasons. When the episode first broadcast in 2016, Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief of content, said, “The goal is to do this over six decades, in six seasons presumably, and do the whole program over eight to 10 years.”
In October 2019, show creator Peter Morgan inked a large overall agreement with Netflix, further solidifying Sarandos’ strategy. According to Deadline, the deal would include two additional seasons of The Crown after Season 4. We’re back to Plan A after all the back and forth.

After the first two seasons, the cast was updated, and by the time Season 5 arrives, the show is doing the same. After Olivia Colman’s reign as Queen Elizabeth II ends, Imelda Staunton, a Harry Potter actress, will take over.
The streaming service initially denied the claims in November 2019, but two months later confirmed the news. “I am really honored to be joining such an extraordinary creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion,” Staunton said in a statement.
