Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Renewal Status, ABC Will Bring Back the Series?

Published by

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Updates: Renewal talks for ABC’s flagship scripted series have begun, while insiders warn that the process is still in its early stages. Ellen Pompeo, the series’ star and co-executive producer, has also been approached about returning for a second season, according to my sources.

Pompeo, who has been open about her desire to finish Grey’s Anatomy for the past few years, signed a one-year deal for Season 18 in the spring of last year. She was one of three original cast members whose contracts expired at the end of Season 17; the other two, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., are rumored to have re-signed with multi-year deals.

The timing of the talks on a renewal isn’t surprising. This is normally when ABC starts talking about a new season with ABC Signature and Shondaland, the long-running series’ producers. It’s also when Pompeo’s next deal is usually discussed by ABC Signature.

Due to Grey’s Anatomy’s storied past, the series will be given a royal send-off when it concludes. When ABC renewed the medical drama for an eighth season in May, it was not characterized as definitive. If this is the case, a decision must be made within the next month to provide Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy’s the creator/executive producer, and Krista Vernoff, Grey’s Anatomy’s executive producer/showrunner, enough time to create a satisfying conclusion.

If, on the other hand, the renewal talks continue and Pompeo enters contract talks, it’s a good sign that another season is a real possibility. Despite tough negotiations, last season, Grey’s Anatomy was able to earn a 19th season renewal with the addition of Pompeo, Wilson, and Pickens Jr.

Hidden Remote

According to ABC officials, Grey’s Anatomy would be happy to be on the air for years to come. The longest-running primetime medical drama in television history is still the network’s highest-rated scripted series and one of the most popular scripted shows on television after eighteen seasons.

“We’re overjoyed to have it on the calendar.” “It’s a gift,” Craig Erich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, told Deadline in September. “As long as all of the producers and Ellen [Pompeo] believe there are meaningful stories to tell, we’ll keep doing the show.”

Pompeo, for one, has already begun planning her post-Anatomy Grey’s future, and she has thanked Disney-ABC for their long-standing relationship.

Following a Covid-themed Season 17 that probed the toll the epidemic has taken on healthcare staff, Grey’s Anatomy has returned to its roots, focusing on medical cases and relationships in the current eighth season, which is set in a post-pandemic world.
