Kirsten Dunst Updates: Kirsten Dunst’s high-spirited Mary Jane helped Spider-Man and its sequel earned $1.6 billion at the box office along with Toby McGuire, but she didn’t earn what he did.
Kirsten Dunst starred alongside Tobey Maguire in the Spider-Man franchise and was featured on posters for the sequel, but she did not receive the same paycheck as her co-star; now, she’s speaking out about it.
The actress, 39, starred as Mary Jane Watson, love interest and wife of Peter Parker, in the 2002 superhero film, reprising her role in the second and third films. While the first movie grossed $821 million (the sequel made $789 million), the star said the disparity between her and her male co-star, 46, was “extreme.”
“The pay disparity between the actress and Spidey was very extreme,” the actress recalled in a recent interview. “I didn’t even think about it. I just thought, “Oh yeah, Toby plays Spider-Man. She joked, “But do you know who was on the cover of the second Spider-Man poster?
Spider-Man and me. In an interview, she also recalled that Spider-Man’s producer took her to fix her teeth for that role at the age of 19.
What Kirsten Dunst Says About the Pay Gap?
Kirsten continued, “She made me feel beautiful. As a 16-year-old girl, you feel bad about yourself, right? So, my first experience of a more “exciting” role through her eyes gave me confidence that helped me deal with a lot of other things.”
Despite the disparity in wages and dental procedural demands, the Golden Globe-nominated actress still looks back on her time as Mary Jane with interest.
Kirsten recently revealed she would be open to reprising her role, 14 years later. At the premiere of her upcoming movie The Power of the Dog on November 11, Kirsten told Variety when asked if she’s open to returning to the superhero world: “I’ll do it. Why not? That would be fun. I will never refuse such a thing. “She joked, “At this point, I will be old MJ with a little Spiderman baby. “
