Serena Williams Updates: The premiere of King Richard was a night of family and contemplation for tennis sensation Serena Williams. Williams, 40, and her 4-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia, as well as her husband, Alexis Ohanian, 38, attended the film’s premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
The film follows Williams and her sister Venus as they make their way up the tennis ladder with the help of their father and coach, Richard.
Williams’ costume was created by David Koma, and the mother-daughter duo donned similar outfits on the red carpet, featuring rhinestone-covered black bodysuits. Olympia chose a crystal-covered pair of tights with glittering Mary Jane shoes, while Williams sported a heeled black over-the-knee boot that was also bejeweled.
“I’m wearing David Koma,” Williams told Yahoo! News. “I saw this outfit on the runway and thought, ‘This is what I need to wear for the premiere.’
On the red carpet, Williams spoke to People about the film and what she hopes audiences take away from King Richard’s message.
“You have the opportunity to live your dream. You can’t be frightened of hard labor, you know, elbow grease, but more importantly, you can’t be afraid to have fun while doing it. As if you need assistance and that having a familial connection is priceless. You never give up on something like that. You’re never going to give up on it, “she stated.
Actor Will Smith, 53, plays Williams’ father in the film, and he spoke with People about his part.
