Why was Squid Game censored by Netflix?

Squid Game Updates: Squid games is a Korean drama about an alternate world where people die by playing deadly games in themselves who are in debt like themselves.

As you might expect it is very hard-hitting emotionally and questions a lot of practice and mostly dark. Since it is marketed as family content by Netflix, there was skepticism about it from the beginning.

We often see a lot of Korean and also Indian movies released as international content in the OTT platforms as it is easy to dub or add subtitles to the movie especially considering the advantages of the technology these days and it is of course helping the creators to get noticed by an even broader audience.

The problem with this approach is that the creators who worked in the original content are not involved most often in the dubbed or subtitled versions. This in turn creates the paradox where the content that is released is not released in the exact intention as it was created.

This is been very obvious in certain cases but less often do you get a project this big. It is not new as we saw studios screwing before like in Avengers Endgame, Bahubali, Family Man 2. But when you change the intention of the movie or the literal meaning of content then it is censorship and not an accident anymore.

Twitter user ymmayer said “ not to sound snobby but I’m fluent in Korean and I watched squid game with English subtitles and if you don’t understand Korean you didn’t really watch the same show. translation was so bad “ also added to that the subtitled version did not preserve any of the original version’s intention or quality.

Another Twitter user Jayeamber1 replied to that tweet citing that both she and her flatmate was watching the show and had different subtitles in each other’s laptop. This is a serious issue considering that a show like this is intended to convey certain cultural beliefs and is very different and unique.

This level of censorship is bad because what if this happened to a political film or a film that criticizes certain beliefs, it would’ve been a disaster and this begs the question that was this the first time something like this happened?

As for Netflix’s side of the argument, they did not issue any official release and did not comment on any of the questions posted on social media yet. Hope you’ve learned something about the issue and thank you for reading.
