Halo: Combat Evolved Important Animation Absent In Anniversary Graphics

Halo: Combat Evolved Updates: Recently a split-screen video was posted on the Halo subreddit that clearly showed that an important animation was missing from the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary graphics.

Halo: Combat Evolved launched in the year 2001 on the original Xbox. A remaster of the game was done for its tenth anniversary therefore, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary came out in 2011 on the Xbox 360. The remaster was released with updated graphics.

However, recently an eagle-eyed player had recently taken to Reddit to share a subtle animation difference that he noticed on the Assault Rifle.

Bungie, Halo’s original developer, left the IP in 2010. They left Microsoft’s 343 as their primary developer for the Halo franchise. As developers, they had always worked to satisfy the fans of the game and also worked on updating the armor and other graphics.

343 took charge of the development of the game and as developers their first project was the remaster of the 2001 Halo game. Halo: CE Anniversary is meant to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the game. The game introduced new graphics and remastered textures and audio. It also included reused assets from other Halo titles.

However, players were given an option to switch to the default graphics anytime. There have been contradictory views on 343’s remaster of the game, while some prefer the modernized version, some think that it lacks the original game’s art style.

One notable difference between the two versions of the game was spotted recently by Reddit user CrassusMaximus. He made a split-screen video of the different graphics and posted it on Halo’s subreddit. In the original game, the ejection port of the Assault Rifle is open and closed after firing to release the spent shell casing while in the anniversary remaster, the ejection port remains static when the casing is released.

This small detail cannot be seen by a single player as the rifle remains obstructed from his sight. However, a second player standing to the right of the player can notice the switch in the graphics of the Assault Rifle.

The small detail just shows how much minute details went into the graphics. Though it is hardly noticeable, the small omission in the anniversary version makes a difference to the general authenticity of the graphics. In the comments of the post, S-192 observed that in the anniversary version the casings of the Assault Rifle are brighter and bigger in for the ejection port.

It is not a dig at 343’s development of the game but it is just an illustration of how much the fans care for the game to notice such minute details.

343 is continuously working to improve its port of Halo: Combat Evolved as they plan to add it to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection. They have been making corrections to the game. So far the corrections include proper fog, bump mapping, shield lighting.

Corrections have also been made to the graphics issues of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Judging by 343’s correction spree, it is possible that they would go back and add the ejection port animation to the Anniversary graphics. Halo’s next mainline game Halo: Infinite is set to release later this year.
