Gunn was shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when he was fired by Marvel Studios. The decision was made when some old tweets by the director resurfaced where he had made jokes about pedophilia and rape. Gunn said that at that point it felt like he lost everything and that his career was over. He admits that he regrets the words he used in those tweets but those old tweets don’t reflect the person he is now.

Following the news of his firing, the cast members of Guardians of the Galaxy were among the many who came out in support of Gunn. They penned down a letter asking for Gunn’s reinstatement. Gunn said that the gesture made him feel loved and fulfilled.

When asked if he feels like a victim of the cancel culture, he said that the cancel culture is a bigger issue than that. He said that cancel culture also includes people like Harvey Weinstein who deserve to be canceled. He accepted that though se part of the culture is painful, the rest of it is accountable, therefore, forming a balance.

Gunn’s career did not end after being fired from Marvel Studios. He was rehired by Warner Bros. and his film The Suicide Squad is set to release on August 6. Gunn became the second director to helm both a DC and Marvel movie. While talking about the differences between the two Studios, Gunn said that Kevin Feige is more involved in the editing process of the film than Warner Bros.

Gunn praised DC’s ability to make both R-rated and family films under its studio. He said that the people at Warner Bros are interested in building out a new world and giving creative liberty to its filmmakers.
