In literary circles, Thomas Savage’s novel “The Power of the Dog,” published in 1967, is considered as one of those underappreciated gems that ought to be rediscovered. With the Netflix release of her film adaptation, filmmaker Jane Campion is set to deliver this searing narrative of two brothers, a widow, and her son who upend their peaceful but constrained lives on a Montana ranch to a large global audience.
The Power Of The Dog’s trailer debuted today, giving the public its first look at Oscar-winner Jane Campion’s first movie since 2009’s Bright Star.
The Netflix drama, which was shot in New Zealand and is set in 1920s Montana, stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the cruel, rich rancher Phil Burbank. Phil and his brother George (Jesse Plemons) encounter Rose in a restaurant on their way to market (Kirsten Dunst).
She is the widowed proprietor, and she and her impulsive son Peter manage the restaurant (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Phil is nasty, and he makes them both cry. Rose is consoled by George, who subsequently marries her.
That sets off a chain of events in which Phil alternates between rage and cunning, insulting Rose and openly ridiculing her kid. Phil, on the other hand, appears to take the youngster under his wing. It might be a simple act of goodwill, a threat, or something more sinister.
Campion wrote and directed The Power Of The Dog. Cumberbatch, Dunst, Plemons, Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, and Adam Beach are among the cast members.
Producers include Emile Sherman, Iain Canning, Roger Frappier, Tanya Seghatchian, and Campion herself. Ari Wegner is the director of photography. Peter Scibberas is the editor. Jonny Greenwood created the film’s score.
On November 17th, The Power Of The Dog will be released in select theatres and on Netflix on December 1st.
