The Walking Dead Season 11 Premiere Stumbles Towards the Show’s Finale

The Walking Dead Season 11 Updates: The Walking Dead release has been dubbed “The Beginning of the End” by AMC. That is technically correct… But that’s all there is to it. It’s not a horrible episode of TWD, just a very average one. That’s OK with me after ten seasons of recklessly swerving over that figurative, zombie-infested highway.
In “Acheron, Part 1,” nothing actually begins. The preceding six episodes, which were shot during quarantine, were connected to the pre-pandemic episodes of Season 10 on the other side of the bridge.
As a result, the town of Alexandria is still grieving from the Whisperers’ destruction, while Eugene, Kumiko, Ezekiel, and Princess arrive at the Commonwealth, led by the Commonwealth’s doppelgangers. Let’s start with the Alexandrians, as they’re two very different tales.
The loot: A large quantity of MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat in Army parlance), which are required because the Alexandrians are without food and crops as a result of the Whisperer invasion. The issue is that the base is completely overrun with army zombies. The nonsense: Because all of the zombies are sleeping, they must tiptoe around the base to avoid waking them awake.
That’s also true when the zombies are ultimately awoken, not by any of the noises they’ve been making, but by a drop of blood on one of their cheeks. When Maggie learns that some of her old crew has arrived at the colony, she proposes a new mission: go to her old settlement, Meridian, and take all the food that’s left after the zombies and that seemingly nihilistic group of killers known as the Reapers (who we met back in “Home Sweet Home”) have overrun it.

Maggie, Daryl, Gabriel, Negan, and other members of the gang headed off, only to be pushed onto a Washington, DC subway line that Maggie insisted on using. Given the weather up there, Negan notices a high flood line in the tunnel, which means water may rush in at any moment, but because it’s Negan issuing the alarm, everyone orders him to shut up. Negan also brings up the important issue that no one knows if the metro tube is even open and that they may be marching straight into a dead end.
He’s had enough of going through a possible deathtrap and getting spat on, as well as the tangible tension between him and Maggie, who has yet to forgive him for killing her husband Glenn in the season seven release back in 2016.
It’s a dramatic moment that’s well-written, but it doesn’t reveal anything new about either character. Maggie’s hatred for Negan hasn’t changed, as we’ve known since she returned to the show.
Once they get to the Commonwealth, Team YEEP (that’s Yumiko, Eugene, Ezekiel, and Princess—sorry, writing down all four names is a pain) has a more enjoyable crazy trip. What’s wonderful about this scenario is how surprised the quartet is when they’re asked which college they attended. How could it possibly matter, Yumiko wonders? It’s the zombie apocalypse, and a college is no longer an option.
That is by far the most intriguing development in “Acheron, Part I,” and at the end of the day, tonight’s episode was a little lackluster for a season opener, particularly for the show’s final season. However, because “Part II” is due out next week. If we eventually get to see the actual Commonwealth, and/or the ruins of Maggie’s former village Meridian, there might be some significant changes in Season 11 that start off the season in earnest.
