The Suicide Squad: Do Supervillains Have a Secret Desire to Be Superheroes?

Published by

The latest teaser for The Suicide Squad suggests that some of the team’s super-villains aspire to be superheroes. The latest teaser for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad suggests that certain Task Force X personnel are attempting to reinvent themselves as superheroes.

After making its cinematic debut in 2016, the Suicide Squad is making a comeback in the DCEU. While the sequel connects back to the original film in certain ways, The Suicide Squad takes the series in new directions, with more than a dozen new characters joining the team.

While characters like Peacemaker, Bloodsport, Polka-Dot Man, and Weasel may be unfamiliar to popular audiences, they will be once the film reaches cinemas later this summer.

Even though there is still a lot of mystery surrounding The Suicide Squad, the second teaser offered fans a better idea of what to expect. With the addition of Starro the Conqueror to the DCEU, Amanda Waller is expanding the team even more.

The Suicide Squad: Do Supervillains Have a Secret Desire to Be Superheroes?

The Suicide Squad’s base has always been that it is largely comprised of super-villains from the whole DC Universe. However, by standing aside from something traditional like the Justice League, Task Force X has veered further into antihero terrain throughout the years. While the majority of Suicide Squad members are there to shorten their sentences, not everyone has the same goals.

David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man is one of the highlights of The Suicide Squad’s latest teaser, as he may be secretly hoping to finish the evil chapter in his life. Polka-Dot Man exclaims joyfully that he’s a superhero at one point, implying that he really wants to be a force for good.

If so, considering the size of the cast in the sequel, this would be a major topic for The Suicide Squad to tackle. It’s hardly a leap to think that some team members may wish to make amends.

The DCEU even examined how both the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey through Harley Quinn proved it was no longer the conventional super-villains. While Harley slips in a morally murky place, somebody like Polka-Dot-Man might simply want to be no longer a criminal and do social good.

The Suicide Squad, like Ratcatcher-2’s Daniela Melchior, wished to transition from their former status as an enemy to become a force for good, which is quite impossible. It would be one-dimensional for the whole tale if all the villains had the same mentality.

Obviously, people will always be on the team, since Amanda is obliged to do so. If, however, figures like Polka-Dot Man were to actively follow his desire to be a hero, another level would be added to the following.

This doesn’t mean that it should be simple just because a villain wants to become a hero. There is a cause for Amanda because they have committed crimes in one manner or another. That being said The Suicide Squad would offer a fascinating story beat, with several of them investigating the perspective of this entrance in the DCEU chronology.
