Record of Ragnarok: Zeus’ Plan Backfires because of His Creepy Ways

Published by

In the first season of Netflix’s Record of Ragnarok, Zeus subverts the final boss trope only to have it backfired because of his creepy ways.

Adapted from the Manga series of the same name, Record of Ragnarok premiered on Netflix in June 2021. When Zeus and the pantheon of gods from all cultures want to wipe humanity off the face of Earth, it falls on 13 elite warriors to save mankind from imminent destruction.

Brunhilde, the oldest of the Valkyries, challenges the gods to a series of duels to give humans a chance to show that they deserve to live. The gods take up the challenge but only in the second fight, there is a subversion by Zeus which eventually leads the plan to backfire.

Record of Ragnarok: Zeus’ Plan Backfires because of His Creepy Ways

Brunhilde thinks that her warriors will defeat the gods in the games of Valhalla but her plan turns sour when Thor defeats the Chinese warlord Lü Bu, in the first bout. However, she is confident of winning the next bout as she announces Adam, the first man created by God in Eden, as her prizefighter. But, Zeus calls for a switch in the fight cards. It appears he doesn’t want to go last.

It shocks everyone because everyone expected him to go last as he is the strongest among them and “God Father of the Cosmos”. Zeus confronts Shiva, the Hindu God of Destruction, who was meant to fight against Adam and switches his turn with him.

Zeus’ interest in fighting Adam has everything to do with his lust. In the beginning, he is seen ogling Brunhilde and passing derogatory comments. The other gods don’t comment and seem to tolerate him but the Valkyrie leader feels uncomfortable and disgusted at Zeus’behaviour.

The bi-sexual Zeus’ interests are now focused on the fit and lean Adam who only has a leaf covering his loins. Zeus changes the lineup to get close to Adam physically.

The fight, however, does not go according to Zeus’ plans because Adam is using his gift of Divine Intervention to copy many of Zeus’ moves. Adam mimics the god’s moves but it only turns Zeus on. It seems like Zeus is about to lose the fight as he is sporting a broken neck after a barrage of blows. However, in the end, he manages to gas Adam out.

While Adam’s body is burning, Zeus is in no better condition. His muscles have exploded and he is barely alive. The gods are now worried about their immortality. With Zeus’ turnover, the gods are vulnerable, making the fans wonder who would finally become the victor in Records of Ragnarok.
