Given the popularity of Pokémon Sword & Shield on the Nintendo Switch, adding a Gen VIII Pokémon to the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate makes a lot of sense. Despite a rather divided reaction from veteran series fans, Pokémon Sword & Shield has sold over twenty million copies. Because of the long history of Super Smash Bros. and the immense popularity of the Pokémon property, a Pokémon would be a safe, albeit boring, way to finish the DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The question then becomes, which Pokémon will appear in Smash? The addition of a Pokémon like Rillaboom to the game would bring a fully-evolved Grass-type starter, guaranteeing that all starter types were covered, as Charizard/Incineroar cover Fire-types and Greninja cover Water-types. Zacian may add another sword combatant to the mix, while Sirfetch’d bring his lance and shield.

There are a lot of possibilities for a Gen VIII representation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and it’s difficult to deny that a Sephiroth-style trailer in which Sirfetch’d chop Galeem in two would be amazing. The addition of a Gen VIII Pokémon to the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate seemed like a safe bet at first, and if Sakurai’s team is unable to end the DLC with a bang (such as getting a PlayStation character into the game), then a Pokémon could be seen as a fitting end to the DLC, given that it was Pokémon that helped launch the series in the first place.
