James Gunn Reveals DC Characters Who Almost Appeared in The Suicide Squad

Published by

James Gunn Updates: James Gunn recently revealed in a Twitter thread all the DC characters from the comics that he considered to put in The Suicide Squad but later decided against it.

The Suicide Squad presents a chance for lesser-known characters from the DC comics to make unexpected live-action appearances on the big screen. In DC’s usual way, the characters would become cannon fodder in the end anyway.

In James Gunn’s version of The Suicide Squad, he has gathered a plethora of DC characters. However, it seems like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the only antihero whom the casual audience would recognize. There will be some characters who will return from David Ayar’s version of The Suicide Squad include Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.

Among the new additions, there is John Cena’s Peacemaker, Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, and King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone. The Thinker portrayed by Peter Capaldi, Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), and David Dastmalchian as the Polka Dot Man are the other prominent newcomers.

What James Gunn has to say about the Characters

GeekTyrant

He wrote in the tweet that every character in The Suicide Squad serves a purpose to the story, great or small, and even though he loves the other characters that he mentioned in the thread, they did not make it to the movie because they did not serve the story quite so well. However, he said that he is open to using these characters in the future.

The supervillains mentioned in the thread are Livewire, Man-Bat, Chemo, KG Beast, Knockout, Gunhawk, Mr. Freeze, Killer Frost, Black Spider, Solomon Grundy, Punch & Jeweler, Rainbow Creature, and Deathstroke. Joe Manganiello, who played Deathstroke/Slade Wilson in Zack Snyder’s 2017 film Justice League, revealed that he had cleared his schedule to join the cast of Suicide Squad. Deathstroke was a part of the Suicide Squad according to the earliest draft but was later eliminated by Gunn.

Gunn has teased that almost everybody dies in The Suicide Squad. Therefore, if another installment was to be made, there would be a lot of open spots for lesser-known characters to fill in.
