Netflix Paid The Witcher Season 2 Crew During the Show’s COVID Shutdown

The Witcher Season 2 Updates: Director Stephen Surjik revealed that Netflix continued to pay the crew of The Witcher during the coronavirus shutdown. After the humongous success of the first season of The Witcher, there was a lot of excitement when the second season was announced.

Unfortunately, the production for season 2 was forced to halt- along with the entire industry- in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Netflix, however, decided to pay the crew during the long halt in production.

Director Stephen Surjik, whose previous stints include The Umbrella Academy, is one of the directors on Season 2 of The Witcher. He talked to ComingSoon.net, discussing the pause in production, and explained, “I started this in December of 2019.

And as you all know, by March 13, 2020, we were all on a plane on the way home wrapped up like we’re on our way to Mars.” He went on to point out, “Two or three months went by at which point — and I got to say that Netflix paid my crew for almost the whole time.

I’ve never seen anything like it. They were really incredibly supportive at a time when everyone was afraid, and everyone was paranoid that the world was collapsing, and they stood up and they did that.”

The Witcher Season 2 Renewal Status

The Witcher was renewed for Season 2 even before Season 1 was released. Season 1 of the show was highly successful. Therefore, fans were excited when the production for season 2 started in February of 2020.

The production, however, had to be stopped when Game of Thrones actor, Kristofer Hivju got attached to The Witcher as Nivellen and was found to have contracted COVID-19. The actor recovered several weeks later. Filming for the show resumed in August. In November, certain crew members tested positive for COVID-19 and the shooting was once again forced to stop

After so many halts, the filming finally wrapped in April of 2021. There has still been no official release date for season 2, but Netflix has dropped se clips and teasers for the upcoming season, such as the character teasers for Ciri and Geralt.

Season 2 of the show is set to adapt the events and characters of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, and Sword of Destiny. The upcoming season will see some major developments including major character death.

The cast of The Witcher includes Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Joey Batey as Jaskier. The first season of The Witcher is now streaming on Netflix.
