Umbrella Academy Season 3 Star Opens Up About Health Struggles & Disordered Eating

Published by

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Updates: Tom Hooper who we know as Luther from Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, opens up about his past health struggles as he suffered from disordered eating.

British actor Tom Hooper plays the role of Luther Hargreeves in Umbrella Academy. Luther is a fan-favorite character who is known for his brutish strength and loved for his sheepish personality and big brother mentality.

Over the years, Hopper has taken up many roles. Some might recognize him as Sir Percival from the BBC show Merlin or from his recurring role as Dickon Tarly in HBO’s Game of Thrones. He was recently seen in the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson.

Hopper has always been seen in such physically demanding roles. Seeing his fitness and muscular build, it is surprising to learn that he has struggled with an eating disorder for many years.

Speaking with People, Hopper stated that he has struggled with an unhealthy lifestyle in the past and suffered from an eating disorder. He said that he is an extremist in a lot of things he does and that goes to the damaging things he used to do in the past. He admits that he had a very unhealthy lifestyle back in his 20s.

He used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day and eat fast food on most days. On his trips to McDonald’s, he would order a Big Mac meal with a large strawberry shake and follow it with two cheeseburgers on the side. Some days he would eat 12 Krispy Kreme donuts in one sitting or two large Domino’s pizzas.

He said that as a young man with high metabolism, he looked fit on the outside despite the high amount of food consumption. Though, it messed him up on the inside. He suffered from severe headaches and used to be sick all the time. He admits to having lived with this unhealthy food habit for a long time.

He further said that the fitness routine that he followed for his roles did little to help improve his health. It only made him focus on looking good on the outside but it didn’t help him improve his actual health. He continued being ill and having low energy.

He eventually learned about gut health and which food he should eat and which he should avoid making him healthy. With his education in gut health, Hopper has been successful in improving his health and lifestyle and that is what encouraged him to speak out about his struggles so that people like him can take inspiration from him.
