The Kominsky Method Season 3: Why Michael Douglas Was ‘Nervous’ About Premiere

Published by

The Kominsky Method Season 3 Updates: The Kominsky Method recently premiered its last season, which is both hilarious and emotional, and it’s ultimately a fitting send-off for the Chuck Lorre-produced comedy.

The last six episodes are full of unforgettable occasions for Michael Douglas’ Sandy Kominsky and others around him. But, of course, the season begins with the burial of Sandy’s best buddy, Norman Newlander, who was played by Alan Arkin in the first two seasons.

While the montage is well-executed, Douglas was genuinely “nervous” about this portion of Netflix’s Season 3 debut. Norman Newlander, played by Alan Arkin, was a vital component of the program, so it was only appropriate that he have a suitable send-off.

However, the funeral was not without incident, as some of the speakers made statements that were “less than acceptable” for the occasion. When I recently chatted with Michael Douglas about Season 3 of The Kominsky Method, he disclosed that he had qualms about the funeral scene and had discussed them with Chuck Lorre.

Several of Norman’s close ones express honest views that border between heartfelt and improper during the moment. Norman’s ex-Scientologist grandson Robby refers to his remains as a “meat body,” while his girlfriend Madelyn goes into great detail about how the two of them became acquainted. All in all, this seems like a funeral written by Chuck Lorre.

This type of funeral scene was not something Michael Douglas was used to, especially in a comedy, but the actor seemed to have loved it in the end. The sequence was plenty of chuckles, but it also had a lot of heart, which was especially clear in Sandy’s remarks.

The cast’s goodbye to Norman had to have been sad as they shot the sequence. Fans were certainly surprised by the character’s abrupt demise, but with Alan Arkin electing not to return for Season 3, having the character die away made sense.

Even though Norman Newlander was missed during The Kominsky Method’s last season, it was good to see the program pay homage to the character (and by extension Alan Arkin). And if you’ve seen the season, you know Norman is still having an influence on one of the season’s most significant developments.

Netflix has all three seasons of The Kominsky Method accessible to watch.
